One of the support people came to look at my terminal
yesterday, and couldn't find why it was slowing down.
But I noticed he closed applications by clicking "File"
and "Quit" instead of cliking the little x at the top right
hand corner, even though it is faster to just click the x.

I always close my applications by clicking the x, could
that be the reason why my computer is slowing down?

reinstall it for me on Monday. But if I don't find the reason it
might happen again. It happened before.

Choosing file and quit should not make a difference. Is this a knoppix sistem we are talking about? Or something else?

recently there was a thing that piled fonts slowed down the sistem. however, this was the case with Gentoo.

generally speaking, many things can slow down Linux like: daemons, small swap place, small memory, itd.

Why did you ask, is something like that specific to Knoppix?

As for swap space, it should have plenty...

Now it's been re-initialised (not reinstalled) and that improves
it a lot. Still crashes occasionally, though.

I asked because I've never had such problems. At least never in linux Are you maybe using a thin client? Those tend to get bogged down after a while.

Sorry, a thin client is a computer which pulls everything from a server, that is to say it does not have a hard drive. It runs programs directly of a server. As was mentioned, running lots of things for a while will sooner or later start to bog a sistem down. How much RAM does the computer have? I just find it strange that a linux sistem would crash occasionally, because I do not even remember a linux sistem crashing on me (a program here or there, yes, but never the whole sistem). I would probably try to reinstall. Oh, and what exactly do you mean by 'reinitialised'? Rebooted?
