I searched around, and could not find the answer to my specific question...
Does anyone here know how to log in as the root user in Knoppix 3.9?
I know how to use "sudo" in the console, I just need access to files only user ROOT has from within Konsole. I have changed the password for user ROOT, but when I try to log in as ROOT from the root shell, it asks me for the user name, I type root, and it tells me it's invalid. Note: I've been doing all of this from within Knoppix 3.9.
By default, the entire system is logged in as user KNOPPIX, but I need to be logged in as ROOT, because it is vital to what I am trying to do, and I cannot do it without a user interface.

If you're trying to edit files, open up a root console and type 'mc' to run midnight commander as root.

I'm kinda new here but I am trying to learn Linux using Knopix live cd and I just enter su on a console and it converts me to super user at root. From what I read Knopix defaults to no passwords so this seems to work for me.

I'm not trying to edit files, I need to LOG IN as user ROOT. I'm trying to gain access to a locked directory on an external HD with another linux installation.
When I try to login as root with command "Login" from sudo, I enter in "root" as the user name, and it tells me "login incorrect" without letting me enter in any password.

and, of course, will let you set up a password in case you want admin mode in control center or something

Yeah, I tried commander, it says access to the folder is denied.

If you ran mc as root and it didn't allow you access, then even logging in as root will probably not help. If it's locked as you said, I don't know how you would be able to get to it...

As someone said earlier, just open a root terminal, you don't have to put in a password or anything.

Right-click on the penguin in the taskbar, click on "Root Terminal"
Now you will have root access.

When the login screen pops up you give 'console login'. The console opens up. Login as root there. Give the 'startx' command, you are the root.
