i am currently using knoppix 4.0.2 and i cant get connected to the internet using a modem

Need much more info. A cable modem? 56k Modem? Dsl? Internal? External? Pci? Usb? Type, make model and version? The more info you can provide the better the chances are someone can help.

it is a pci generic soft56k modem. when i click on connect it says that the modem is busy.

Chances are it is a "winmodem" but let's check. Open the konsole terminal from your menu and type:
...and press enter. Copy the ouput from konsole and paste it here.

It is a winmodem and uses the Conexant chipset. There are Linux drivers for your modem but it costs. See here. You could go that route, or buy one of the 56k modems already out there that work under Linux. An external serial modem such as an Actiontec or a BestData is the best way to go. Good Luck!

Do the same as what focus_water did and post the output here. Then we can see what brand your modem is, and hopefully discover if it is compatible or not.
