problem mounting sata hd

i am running knoppix 3.6 live
the thing boots properly and all but does not mount the
sata hd even the usb pen drive is not detected when i plug it in.
i tried to see if there are mount points in /mnt/ but there were none.
then i tried to
$fdisk -l
but the drives were not listed
i checked /dev/ and i found 'sda'
and all the drives
but there is lock associated with its icon
it says i do not have permissions to read the ....
what should i do to mount the disk

fdisk -l should display sata drives. try 'sudo fdisk -l'.

its strange. if fdisk is not showing sata drives then how come /dev folder have icons for sata drive? launch konqueror with root permissions and check /dev folder in it.

sudo konqueror

it means Knoppix 3.6 is not recognizing SATA disks. many Linux installers' kernels don't yet support many Serial ATA chipsets. try latest version of Knoppix. i think its 5.0
