cannot run the network card configuration tool

i am new to linux.
i have an ASUS motherboard and a LAN Card.
Knoppix 3.6 detects my network card as eth0
but it does not run the network card configuration tool so that i can set my IP
is there any other way to do that?

any reason why you are using 3.6? Quite an old version, i believe the current is 5.11 or something thereabouts, updating that might fix your problem as it is.
However if that does not you can always edit the /etc/network/interfaces file and change how your network interface is set up.

for example you should have something in that file similar to this

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

If you cannot use DHCP for whatever reason and need to use a static IP
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.100
network 192.168.0.0
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 192.168.0.1

Now these may not be the right values for you, you have to determine them yourself by knowing information about your network

the configuration u told is almost the same... but i need to know which editor i should use to edit the interfaces file? i'm sorry to ask that... i'm totally new to linux.
and yes i'm getting a newer version of knoppix but before that i thought i should learn some linux =P
