Where is the best guide to solving hardware compatibility?
After a Symantec "upgrade" marooned my retiree parents for almost two years, I'd like to help them and their neighbors with an alternative. But so far, no luck on HP Pavilion. I've seen the tips for hardware compatibility on this site and others, read the relevant sections of the O'Reilly book on Knoppix, but feel that the problem requires a much bigger index or guide.
So as not to reinvent the wheel, is there anything like that available?
Thank you in advance!

What exactly is the hardware problem ?

The Specific Problem
On an HP a600Y, booting Kanotix flavor of Knoppix, rebooted with disk in place:
Screen #1 comes up, but no response from mouse to change to English
Therefore no screen #2
Then screen #3 came up with no action by me, followed by lots and lots of code
final three lines:
Retrying with Server Xorg (vesa) .
Retrying with Server Xorg (fbdev) .
Error: No suitable X.Server found for your card.
