    maybe this is not the kind of suggestion you are looking for but my direct experience with Knoppix 6.0.1 says that this problem does not occur in the latest release.

    I am using a USB stick disk and also a "classic" 2.5" USB drive and it works fine (with some glitches that I have mentioned in the forum but that can be overcome easily).

    So give a try to the 6.0.1 release and live happy
