    disabling the screen reader

    First post, and first day using Knoppix...

    I can't seem to shut up the Adriane voice. I read to type "knoppix" on the startup screen, and to type "startx" in shell. Neither seems to work.

    So, how do you stop the voice?

    I'm certain this will be the first of many questions.

    ETA: What else should I do, learn, read, etc....

    Asking how to make the voices stop is how I feel when I use Windows. This should be of some help: dedoimedo.com/computers/orca.html

    When learning Linux, follow your passion. The operating system was creating by people doing just that. Find a subject you're interested in and learn how to use Linux to do it. Pickup a good administration book to get the basics. You will also want to learn at least one scripting language. Stay active in the community.
