Knoppix was not designed or intended to run on a hard disk, but you can use their helpful wiki article to get the job done anyway:

Hd Install HowTo - Knoppix Documentation Wiki

However, most users do eventually run into problems after doing so.

    hardware issue, maybe?

Assuming the liveCD is burned correctly, you could try using some of the cheat codes available at boot time to see if they might help you get past this issue:

If it worked before and nothing has changed on your computer regarding hardware or BIOS configuration, maybe your CD drive or the media that you are using are failing. If you have another computer available, maybe you could try testing the Knoppix disk on it.

As for Knoppix versions, I'm pretty sure it only comes with the GUI included, but perhaps someone will lend a correction if that's wrong.

Knoppix should work with Intel or AMD processors.
