GUI Looses Its "X (Close)" "[] (Maximize)" and "- (Minimize)" Buttons.
Okay Ive been using knoppix for about three years now and have been fighting with this problem all the way through. When ever i run knoppix off a USB stick or install it to a HDD after a while the Default GUI (i belive it is a modified KDE desktop called Knoppix GUI) looses its three buttons at the top right corner of every window (the "close", "maxamize" and "minimize" buttons). Also i cannot move windows around either. This has been very very annoying and if anyone could shed some light on the subject it would be greatly apprechiated.

Have you tried pressing Alt+Spacebar. Check if window Menu appear. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that Knoppix uses metacity or Compiz. If you happen to have a terminal up and running when this occurs, try:
orCode:metacity --replace
Code:compiz --replace
Hopefully this helps.Last edited by astrognome; 03-16-2013 at 02:54 AM. Reason: Had another thought
