    Knoppix as an everyday driver

    How to make Knoppix Useful as your everyday driver.
    You need an internet connection for any of this to work.
    And this assumes you have Knoppix
    7.4.2 on a sandisk 2.0 usb stick. 8,16,or 32 gb.

    Version 7.4.2

    I will try to be exacting, you judge.

    First the problems.

    1. Flashplayer won't update.
    2. Your version of Xscreensaver is very old and needs to be
    updated.
    3. Samsung Unified driver will not load.
    4. Won't play DVD's
    5. XBMC almost doesn't work. It's to old.

    Solutions

    1. Click on the 3rd from the left icon in the taskbar
    at the bottom of the page. This opens a terminal window.
    Type "sudo geany" . Leave off the quotes. Navigate to
    /etc/apt/apt.conf.d and open 00knoppix. It should appear as:

    // Debian/squeeze is the "stable" release for this version of KNOPPIX
    APT::Default-Release "wheezy";
    Apt::Get::Purge;
    APT::Force-LoopBreak 1;
    APT::Cache-Limit 80000000;
    // Acquire:?????::timeout 36000;
    // Acquire::????? { Proxy ??????://localhost:9999"; };

    Very Carefully delete the name wheezy and replace it with
    jessie.

    // Debian/squeeze is the "stable" release for this version of KNOPPIX
    APT::Default-Release "jessie";
    Apt::Get::Purge;
    APT::Force-LoopBreak 1;
    APT::Cache-Limit 80000000;
    // Acquire::????::timeout 36000;
    // Acquire::???? { Proxy?????://localhost:9999"; };

    save and exit.

    Click on the far left icon in the task bar. Go to the Knoppix
    Folder and click on "install components". Check the box that says
    "flashplugin-nonfree" and click okay. Give it about 5 minutes and
    it will update.

    2.Click on the far left icon in the taskbar. Go to preferences
    /Synaptic Package Manager. Click on search, type in exactly,
    "xscreensavers", and click on search. Only "xscreensaver"
    should be displayed. Under latest version it should
    say 5.30-1+b1. If it does not, close Synaptic Package Manager.
    Check your internet connection and try again. When it does say
    latest version is 5.30-1+b1. Click on the xscreensaver, accept marked
    changes, the Apply checkmark should turn green. Click the apply
    checkmark and it should update.

    3. If you do not have a Samsung Printer, skip this.
    Download "UnifiedLinuxDriver-4.01.17.tar.gz". Go to Downloads
    and extract the file to Downloads. Click on the third
    Icon from the left. A terminal window will open. type in
    "sudo pcmanfm", without the qoutes. In the window that
    opens an orange alert should appear just below the word "file".
    Navigate to "/home/knoppix/Downloads/cdroot". Doubleclick on
    autorun, select "execute" and follow the menu to install.

    4.Download "libdvdcss-1.2.11.tar.gz". Go to the Downloads folder
    and extract the file to there. A folder named "libdvdcss-1.2.11"
    will appear. Open that folder. Click on tools and select"Open
    Current Folder in Terminal". Drag the terminal window to the right.
    Click on INSTALL. The folder will open. Highlight and copy
    "./configure --prefix=/usr". Click on the little white box
    in the terminal window. It should fill with white. Type sudo and
    a space. On the white box right click and hit paste. Do the same with
    "sudo ./bootstrap" and "sudo make install". Let the scripts run.
    Close all windows. Your dvd's should now play. Read the copyright information about libdvdcss before you decide to install it.

    5.Click on the far left icon in the task bar. Go to the Knoppix
    Folder and click on "install components". Check the box that says
    "xbmc" and click okay. Give it about 5 minutes and it will update.
    Superrepository adds much more content it is not recommended by the
    "Kodi"Team.

    Nice info, thanks for that.

    But my immediate thought: How to implement that into the Knoppix ISO so that it's on the CD / DVD whenever I boot up Knoppix again.

    Does anyone know how to do so, or is updating a Knoppix a too risky or too complicated thing to do?

    I work with Porteus ( Porteus - Portable Linux ), used to work with Slax, and work occasionally with Puppy, DSL or TinyCore, and all are quite easily tweak-able to include new modules aka updates, but I never did so with any Knoppix.
    Cheers!
    yours truly, Rava
