i cannot get on internet i have a dial- up external modem "u.s.robotics modem" serial port

a little bit more information would be helpful.
Have you used kppp or wvdial to dial up? What have you set as the /dev/ for your modem? What, exactly happens when you try and dial up?

ok knoppix recognized my modem and it dials the telephone NO. WHILE LOGGING INTO INTERNET IT GIVE ME THIS MESSAGE time out while waiting for pppd interface

go into the config for kppp and adjust the timeout within the modem bit to oh say 75 seconds. See if that helps. Also, try limiting your modem to 38200 (or there abouts) connection speed. I sometimes get the same problem because the modem connects at 45k but is unable to make itself understood (when it sends the ppp startup stuff) and so fails. I reduced the connections speed to 38k (you'll see the exact number as it is from a list), and I also added ATW2 as a secondary init string for the modem, as this makes sure that the real connect speed is returned.
