An easy(?) way...
... is to use ReMoot which, together with linEAK, makes your multimedia keys work with kaffeine, Xine, Amarok and a bunch of other mediaplayers. I found it very useful. And if you have a palm pilot or N800 ReMoot can be used as a remote control with its web interface Rewww00t.
