I totally agree with bigtomrodney about the script kiddies who gave you the worthless responses.
One thing to consider (for others) is that if you have an older monitor - instead of telling you "sync out of range" they simply die. I lost a very expensive 17in monitor that way once.
When in doubt start with a lower res and set the sync rates from the boot prompt by pressing F2 and finding the correct startup params.
If you don't see what you need there - boot something else - ( ie your normal default boot) and read the Knoppix cheat text on the CD/DVD...
