ATI is a graphics card or something correct? If so, I don't have one, I have Intel Extreme Graphics (nothing at all extreme about that).

Try running it as a regular user. I usually get X errors if I try to run X programs as root.

I think it is working fine so far. I had some problems with things not working right but I downloaded an update and some map packs and everything should be just fine now.
However I would still like to know why my computer freezes while I am downloading large files, it also froze up while I was playing ET, but it only happened once...

List the specs of your computer and its hardware. That might give a clue.
