can you remember what exactly it was asking when restarting?

the command you should use to mount the usb drive is
    Code:
    mount some_device
Or in knoppix, if you see the device on the desktop, just right click on it and tell it to mount. Then right click on it again and tell it to make it rw.

Well since you got internet working in 4.0, is there really a need to use 3.6? However if you want me to take a look at the output, there is no need to write it to paper, just save it to a text file onto your usb drive (not everything, just the part regarding the network card).

As for working with Linux, I dabbled with it around 6 or so years ago, was so clueless that I left for windows. Then around a year ago, I decided to try again and have stuck to it since.

Also that link you posted doesn't work for me, I just get an error loading page message.

the best guide I can give you is from experience is: just experiment, even if you absolutely screw up your system, you'll have learnt something, I know I have.

As for help and books, these forums are a great place to start, check out the tutorials section, try different distros etc.
