    Can't boot from LiveCD...

I have been trying to boot into Linux on my HP desktop to no avail. The CD boots just fine, but when it begins to load the kernel, the computer reboots itself. I've tried Knoppix, PcLinux, DSL, Ubuntu, Gentoo, and Mandriva, with the same results every time. The CD boots, but won't load the kernel. I know there's nothing wrong with the discs themselves, because I've succesfully used them on many other computers.

The computer I'm having problems with is the following:

    HP Pavilion a610y
    Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
    512mb ram
    Mobo is MS-6577 M-ATX Rev. 3.1

Any insight that could be provided would be wonderful.

Ok, I figured out what the problem is with this specific computer. I need to boot into the system with the following argument:

Could someone explain acpi and why it needs to be negated for me to boot?

    Thanks so much.
