    Knoppix and files in hard drive

    Hi
    I am a linux newb. windows xp on my laptop crashed and i wanted to retreive my data from hard drive. Discovered Knoppix and just booted it. hda1 and hda2 have been detected. hda2 has all files on c drive but hda1 is empty and i cant find any files i need!!! help!!! plus i plan to transfer the files into an external hard drive. how do i access the external drive?? apologies if these are silly ques....

    plug in External Hard disk and boot up from Knoppix.
    Knoppix will recognize External Disk as hdb.
