Widescreen in Knoppix
Hi everyone,
I have a problem with my new laptop (Dell Inspirion 9400) and Knoppix 5.0 on DVD. The screen can go up to 1440x900 (widescreen), but I can not get it. In fact, I can not get any of the widescreen resolutions.
I have played with boot-up options (knoppix screen=1440x900), but it does not help a bit
Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem?
Cheers,
Niceno
P.S. Once upon a time, I was using RedHat 3.0 (well, time flies, doesn't it
) and it had some tools like Xconfigurator, XF86config, which I used to configure the screen. I can not find these tools any longer. What should I use to configure the screen?

which graphics card does your i9400 use? if it is an intel card, you'll need to have 915resolution running to patch the video bios to take care of the widescreen resolution.
Oh, and try xorgconfig to do the configuration of your xorg.conf.Life is complex, it has a real part and an imaginary part.

Thanks AlexK for the fast reply ...
but you are flying too high for me
How do I patch the video bios? By setting resoltion to 1440x915? Or in some other way? Do I patch first, or do I set the resolution first by xorgconfig?
Many thanks,
Niceno

The solution to this problem entirely depends on your video card model. Which is it ? ATI or Intel ?
The equivalent to xorgconfig and XF86Config in Knoppix is :
Code:dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

@ niceno,
what happens when you try to set the resolution either by using the command antidrugue gave or by editing xorg.conf manually and setting the proper resolution.
The 915resolution stuff I mentioned was for laptops which use an Intel Integrated graphics card.Life is complex, it has a real part and an imaginary part.
