Knoppix 3.7 corrupted permanent home directory
I'm fairly new to Knoppix and Linux in general. Recently, I've been having some hard drive issues and I've been trying out Knoppix as I temporary Windows replacement. I created a permanent home directory on a USB drive to work with it. Yesterday, I was experimenting with running programs under Wine when, I think, KDE crashed. The desktop had gone black, and it froze when I tried to shut down. When I restarted, Knoppix loads fine but several strange error messages come up when starting KDE and it eventually dumps me to a command prompt. If I don't say 'home=scan' when starting knoppix it works fine, except that I don't have the saved home directory loaded.
Is there any way to repair the the permanent home directory img? or at least recover the data?
Oh, also, why does the permanent home directory have to be a fixed size?
