For regular notebooks, I think you'd be haed pressed to find a better choice for the money than a Dell pre-installed with Ubuntu. If size isn't important, the Asus EEE PC is a magnificent little Linux laptop for a really good price.

I cannot say that pre-installed Linux is a really great deal. They tend to be Intel based, and the low end Intel are often 32-bit (Core Duo) based. At this point, you really want to go 64-bit. Linux boxes will hang on to 32-bit longer than Windows, but eventually, you will not want it. The lower priced Dells both look 32-bit.
Typically, you can buy a lower end AMD based 64-bit laptop including Vista 64-bit today that will out perform an equivalent priced Intel based laptop, and load your own Linux, either replacing Vista, or duo-booting. At least that is what I have found over the last 4 years -- including a Toshiba A210 that I bought last year, brand new, and an ever better deal on an Acer Aspire 5050 refurb.
