don't remember putting in a password
Bought a Acer Aspire One for Christmas. Some kind soul told me how to download new programs but I come unstuck when I am asked for my password. When I set it up I don't remember putting in a password. Anyway in the instructions for setting up when it tells you how to add a password the first thing is tells you to do is change the password. Then you are requied to put in the old password and enter the new one. I have tried everyone to try to find what would be the password in a newly bought netbook, including Acer but they cannot help at all. There must be a way of retrieving it. Can anyone help.

Have read all your instructions but am afraid I am not able to follow any of them. The machine came with the Linux program installed and a rather useless instruction book. There is no CD Rom slot only an SD card one. THe model is a ZG5.

I don't have an Acer Aspire One so can't test it, but try this HowTo for resetting your root password:
Add Apps to the Acer Aspire one - Step 4: Change the root password.oz

Did you try pressing escape key at initial boot and see if the grub instructions work?
