USB devices not detected in RHEL5.5 SERVER TIKANGA on a DELL XPS 15 la

[getasif]

Hello there I have a new DELL XPS 15 laptop installed with RHEL 5.5 SERVER Tikanga and Windows 7.

I am able to access USB devices - pendrives,External drives etc in Windows 7 but not in Linux.


There is absolute no message shown if I insert a pendrive.

I tried accessing the USB devices using Ubuntu Live CD and I can access them easily.

Can someone help me to access these USB devices in RHEL 5.5 Server.

Perhaps what you need is Gnome Disk Mounter, which should be available on your RHEL 5.5 system. I use it with CentOS 5.6 and predecessors.

add a

iommu=soft

to the boot options when starting up RHEL and then try running this command after the distro has booted into the desktop:

modprobe -r ehci_hcd

This will hand over control of the I/O ports to software, while the last command forces the USB controller to run at USB 1.1 speeds. Very crude workaround but it is often the last possible solution available to fall back on when such issues about USB ports not accepting any devices pop up on any machine. Which is odd because this issue only seems to occur on a very specific subset of 2.6.27 kernels, and not the 2.6.18 that is used in REHL.

Unfortunately, if this does not work, then I have no clue on hot to assist you any further.
