Sony Vaio VGN-AW31M laptop running redhat 5 (error message wierless)
Hi, fist off i would like to say sorry if i get anything wrong, this is my first time posting.
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-AW31M laptop running redhat 5, And when i try to activate my wlan0 wierless connection, I get this error message.
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.
Determining IP information for wlan0...SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
I also have a eth0 connection, that is fine from installation RHEL5 64bit, my old desktop was windows 7.. 64bit wierless worked fine on that. i have been on the sony web site to update drivers but no linux support..thx sony.
I have been trying to solve this problem for the best part of 3 days now with no luck, any help would be awesome as i want to ditch this wire and get mobile again.
P.S I am new to linux so pls assune i know nothing ty
Also could i just add.... my wireless switch on my laptop works fine as does my bluetooth and the switch is on..........Last edited by drsonic; 01-23-2012 at 11:41 AM.

sorry but I am haveing a little trouble folowing here!!!
the file i downloaded wount let me run them with ./configure make make install commands as there are only 3 files in the folder. they are as follows "iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode" "LICENSE.iwlwifi-5000-ucode" "README.iwlwifi-5000-ucode"
sorry in advance if this seems lame.....
- 01-24-2012 #9
I looked at the README that was in the files.
Looks like the only thing needed now is to copy the firmware to the correct directory.
From the iwlwifi-5000-ucode-8.83.5.1-1 directory, as root:
After that, reboot. See if you can get a connection.Code:cp iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode /lib/firmware
