i have a compaq, which is the same hardware made by the same company. (presario r3000 series)
Linux runs well, but you might want to watch what hardware you get. I have an Nvidia vid card, but they also offer ATI.
Also they use the broadcom wifi, so ndiswrapper works well under 32-bit mode, but you are stuck beiing wired or buying a usb wifi card for 64 bit high speed surfing (this is what stops me from running 64 bit linux) if you get one with a 64 bit processor.
I've had little or no trouble with anything else.

Speaking from experince, ATI doesn't support any of their mobility cards, the ones found in latops. You'll have a hard time getting 3D accel about of any AITI mobility card.
I don't know about nVidia.
