With 256 meg ram I would suggest that you try puppy slacko..

boot live from cd and use gparted to create two partitions one fat32 for storage and one for a 512meg odd linux swap file.

when you shut down the first time you can create a save file for installed apps and changes, say yes to adding files, and the remaining space can be for storage. access additional storage via file manager, it will be mounted at boot

puppy runs in ram so you can remove the cd after you are up if you want to use the cd drive.

if thats an hp 2170us I think it will take 1gig ddr ram so mint17, solydx or even mx14 would likely run much nicer. you can leave the swap file and even make it bigger...I usually go twice ram..and the fat32 partition can be reformatted during install of your choice.

the puppy cd will come in handy for formatting and getting online on project hardware, now and later

Looks like you have the factory 2x512 for 1 gig ram but appears the second stick is not installed?? is it seated properly?

perhaps rokytnji can understand it better

    Code:
    Handle 0x0006, DMI type 6, 12 bytes
    Memory Module Information
    	Socket Designation: DIMM 1
    	Bank Connections: 0 1
    	Current Speed: 60 ns
    	Type: DIMM SDRAM
Installed Size: 512 MB (Single-bank Connection)
Enabled Size: 512 MB (Single-bank Connection)
    	Error Status: OK

    Handle 0x0007, DMI type 6, 12 bytes
    Memory Module Information
    	Socket Designation: DIMM 2
    	Bank Connections: 2 3
    	Current Speed: 60 ns
    	Type: DIMM SDRAM
    	Installed Size: Not Installed
    	Enabled Size: Not Installed
    	Error Status: OK
with 1 gig and a 2 gig swap you should be able to run mint mate 32 bit ok

I think I'll start a new thread with a title reflecting the current topic.

    Yeah. Start a New Topic.
    Type in
    Code:
    inxi -F
into terminal on your new thread. I am guessing you have a 2 gig of ram but inxi will let me know for sure.

I am kinda confused because of the heat here and I am working with 30lb stone blocks today. So my head is swimming.
All that was said because it looks to me like you have 4 ram slots in that laptop and there is a 1 gig stick in one of them. One is empty. Antother has 512K.
But inxi can clear that up for me later.

Just taking a break right now from the heat outside.

Edit: relooking. It looks like 1 gig of ram is what is showing in 2 slots. bios should say how much ram is being recognised also.

The HP compaq preserio 2170us max ram supported is 1 gig DDR 266MHx/PC2100.

There should only be two slots and you mentioned finding two sticks vs512ssd266 which would suggest brand value select 512 meg 266 mhz.

the slots dimm1 and dimm2 have a max of 512 meg and appears to have 512 in dimm1 and dimm2 is not installed. this would be the factory norm as they shipped with one slot empty but could be upgraded to 1 gig

free -m suggests you have 1 gig ram and a 2 gig swap

check that your ram is seated correctly and also I agree, check the bios as it will be the best spec indicator.

As posted in the other thread, there is in fact 1 gig RAM, shared withthe video. I am now running Antix 13.2 and really impressed with the performance.
After working out the wifi (easily figured out btw, no thanks to google), ice weasel runs very quickly, even allowing very good you tube watching.
