im thinking about installing linux on a laptop and being new to linux i dont know much.... are there any specific differeces, configurations, downloads that i have to do different from a desktop computer?

Not particularly, but you're much more likely to run into incompatible hardware with a laptop. Also, since many laptops don't actually follow the ACPI standards, you can run into weird things with suspend or hibernate, etc.
There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and UNIX. We don't believe this to be a coincidence.
