travelmate 4651
i've just ordered a travelmate 4651LMi for £800 from acer and want to know if anyone has any experience with linux on it. i'm going to test it with kanotix when i get it, but i'd like a bit of forewarning if anything is going to go wrong.
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

I'd say, take a look at this site to find other people's experiences with it.

nope. the closest is the LCi, which doesn't have the geforce go 6600. i installed suse on it and the wifi is hit and miss though i don't know if it's a hardware thing. i'll check that when i get my ADSL back up and running at home (in 3 weeks) and get a wireless router. a problem i seem to get is some corruption of the screen which can only be solved by restarting X. any advice on that would be greatly appreciated. i might need to install the nvidia drivers, so i'll report back on that when i've installed it (i'll probably need to hook it up to the college network to download and install).

if your laptop has a widescreen monitor, usually the one sax2 chooses for you is the "wrong" one, in my dad's case it was better to choose the generic option for the lcd (on Toshiba Satellite P30, SUSE 9.3). And installing the nvidia drivers should help.

well it's 15" with a max res of 1450x1050. like i say, the internet is down at my house so it'll have to wait but i'll try to get access to my college network.

I would hazard a guess and say it should be OK, nvidia cards rock with linux, as ya know

But apart from that nice lappy

i know they rock, but i'm not sure how well they work without the drivers which could be the cause of the corruption i'm getting. gonna pester my parents to get me a carrying case sometime this week so i can bring it into college with me.

hmm... thought that my internet was back up for a sec there, but it might just be the laptop logging into the unencrypted wireless :S
