Need suggestions for an old POS laptop
A friend just dropped a laptop at my door and told me to have fun with it. It's an old sony vaio with a busted harddrive and 64 megs of ram. First tried knoppix - no go. Then tried dsl - no go. Then tried dsl lowram - no go.
I don't wanna throw this thing to the wind, but I also don't want to spend a penny. Anyone have any ingenious ideas as do what I can do with this piece of machinery?10" Sony Vaio SRX99P 850MHz P3-M 256MB RAM 20GB HD : ArchLinux

What kind of errors did it spit out when tried to boot dsl & knoppix?
I am thinking that your best bet is to take it apart."Time has more than one meaning, and is more than one dimension" - /.unknown

I think the distros still need a hard drive to work - maybe just the swap partition. There is a special command to run DSL in RAM only - but it requires a minimum of 128 (I have only 64) -- and there is also an option to run it with "low ram" - but I think that still requires the hard drive. I may go ahead and give the minimax distro a shot, maybe I'll have better luck.
What do you mean by taking it apart? Like pawn the parts? lol. I doubt the hardware is anything I care to stick in one of my computers.10" Sony Vaio SRX99P 850MHz P3-M 256MB RAM 20GB HD : ArchLinux
