Which drivers? You can try SuSE or Ubuntu, both are newbie friendly and have goo hardware detection

which wireless card do you have? Also support for winmodems in linux is minimal... I second the suggestion to try SUSE as it has one of the best hardware detection around and is quite easy to play with.
