Most distros I have tried don't even see that the chip is there, despite it being found in lspci. How to know if you are a geek.

Everything works on my Dv6000z using archlinux x86_64 kernel version 2.6.22.9 . No webcam on this system.
With kernel options set as noapic noirqdebug
nvidia works - used the nvidia-96xx drivers
wireless works - just installed the bcm43xx firmware
suspend 2 ram and disk works - just used the kernel's default stuff set
resume=/swapfile (or whatever your swap partition is)in grub in the kernel line after installing pm-utils
microphone works - confirmed by sending voice clip through amsn
I'v heard of a hack to get the webcam to work. I can't remember where I saw it though. With this setup my system *never* locks. USB works the whole time I'm up, and very rarely does it not shutdown all the way. firmware 3A btw.

I have Ubuntu up and running wonderfully on my dv6636nr here. Everything (webcam, graphics card, wifi card with some tweaking) works, with the exception of the media keys in Amarok. I need to figure out how to get those working.
Here is the link to my howto.

I have aHp dv6000 series notebook with quickplay. apparently, the dv6000 series does not play dvds without running windows because it does not have a linux partition in the hard disk. At least, that's what HP told me. is there any way to create on so i don't have to start windows to play dvds?

*puts in Saturday Night Live Best of Chris Farley DVD*
MPlayer is playing this dvd just fine for me. I think the guy from HP that you got to talk to either...
1. Didn't know what you were asking about.
2. Doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.
My guess would have to be 2, or both. Two levels higher than a newb.
