Linux on laptop with SATA HD

i've tried 2 install FC4... it break (the (an error..) error was anything like "spin_locked" cd "cd_spin_locked"... anything like that )
and i did reset...
tried Ubuntu 5.04 (hoary)(i thing it's a pretty good distro ;) ), it recognize my SATA HD, pre-install from the cd,did reboot and start install from the HD-files... and did break too Sad in the middle....

i got a Fujitsu-siemens amilo1437g+ (80gb SATA,...) with dual boot (XP Pro SP2 ENG)
knoppix did boot fine, but i prefer FC...
can some one help me?
anything... from recompiling with sata drivers.... anything
in the meanwhile, will use knoppix....
i got FC2 on my desktop pc and like it pretty much... and want(HAVE to!!!)install on my laptop an unix config

PS: i can't turn off the sata to ide on bios ( my bios is very limited... :( )
