[SOLVED] Widescreen wont display properly

Hi everyone

I'm having trouble getting Linspire running at 1440x900, I've tried 'gtf 1440 900 60' then putting the generated line into xorg using vi, but when I reboot the screen is squashed horizontally and there is a large black bar going down the side of my monitor.

I've also tried selecting 1280x800 (or something like that) which is another widescreen resolution, but I get the same squashed effect.

I tried installing the ATI drivers by downloading the correct .run package, navigating to it and entering the file name into Terminal but I get 'permission denied' even when in su.

Can someone help please

P.S I'm quite new to Linux

Try su - to gain root privileges. Post exact error message here if any.
Code:
su -

Ok, thanks for your help devils casper, but I'd already tried it through SU.

A friend managed to help me get through using
Code:
sudo sh blahblahblah.run
and the install went 'fine'. At the end it said there were errors during install, and pointed me towards a log file which said :

[Message] Kernel Module : Trying to install a precompiled kernel module.
[Message] Kernel Module : Precompiled kernel module version mismatched.
[Error] Kernel Module : No kernel module build environment - please consult readme.

Any idea what to do next?

Ive done apt-get -u update and apt-get update on a friends recomendation.
