webcam applications

I have xawtv running in color without AUDIO (even tho I've checked/rechecked ALSA).
I misunderstood the use of streamer and found it is a simple grabber for whatever TV station I had previously tuned in. Didn't seem to like it when I ran streamer in another window when I had xawtv running in another window.
Under XP I have the capability to click my webcam and get a snapshot of what it sees. I would like to do this under linux. I see an app called webcam but it seems like it is all too similar to streamer.
Are there apps for web cams that allow one to snap shots with the webcam then save them off somewhere?
