Maybe you should look for the mplayer plugin for firefox, it'll also allow you to view other formats like audio streams, mpegs etc. I think mplayer can handle asf.

Sheesh, mplayer is a pain in the arse. I just screwed around with it for 1.5 hours and it still does not work:
I downloaded skin, and codecs, installed the codecs first like it said on the mplayer website. Installed the skin and the codecs where it said to, downloaded the latest version and did ./configure --enable-gui , It ran as if it worked ok, did make then make install with no errors and then when I do gmplayer from command line it just shows the command line info and hangs as if its running in the background with no gui. any ideas?
By the way xine works ok on my system would there happen to be any codecs to play ASF and WMV files for xine? thanks

If you use xine (as I do) then forget mplayer. Download gxine (http://xinehq.de/index.php/releases) and go to http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.html#gxine to find out how to install the plugin

Yes, but how do you get them to play when I try to open up an AVI or WMV in Firefox? All I get is a dialog box that asks where I want to save it to and the option to play is greyed out.
