Now that seems smooth...
I am a little surprised that there isn't a standard "hook" file name. Changing the system xsession kind of feels like changing a DTD...

is supposed to di, but again all my changes that didnt do diddly were on a different hoem dir then i though so maybe tomorrow I'll try that again

When I looked through /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession this time, I found that it looks through /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/ for scripts to hook. Although that's system-wide, one could at least put a user hook there without changing Xsession.

I saw that, but I do not recall where that gets executed in the x startup process - many apps need it to be called after the display is opened, so that someone owns the display

Of course. It's run at login time. What else could you possible want?

it could be run when the x server itself starts, during bootup - and in some apps case that's a problem as the display isnt setup yet

Isn't that rather a problem with all apps, since it's not defined where to find the X autorization file before login, or have I missed something (of course, gdm _could_ set the env var, but it's still weird)?
And why would you want to run an X app before logging in?

no, i cant think of an X program to start before login -- but there is a script to call programs on X startup(that dont need X) and on login, that is the reason for all the different files i believe

not that i can think of a goof example, but mayve when X starts you want some sort of a timestamp, as opposed to when someone logs into X - like i said, bad example
