How to update firefox on Suse 10.0

rax Just Joined! Join Date: Sep 2005 Posts: 42	How to update firefox on Suse 10.0 Sorry 4 asking this n00b question but I'm a total newbie in Linux. I dont even have idea how u install stuff in Linux, since I'm coming from M$ Windows, and there installing SW is so easy. I just downloaded the latest FF version (v1.5.0.4) for Linux which most of u surely R using. I downloaded a compressed file, fortunately I was able to uncompress the file to finally get the folder where is everything inside to update/install FF on Linux by using Konqueror. I wonder if any1 of u would be so gently to show me how to update FF on Suse Linux 10.0. STEP BY STEP TIA

Go: 'start' -> system -> control center -> software management -> do a search on 'firefox'. Look what versions is installed/available and tick the box in front of it to install a newer version (so it has the Z dispplayed)(hover over the tick box to see the options) -> accept Now it will fetch the package and update automatically __________________ Now what? You have Linux installed and running. The GUI is working fine, but you are getting tired of changing your desktop themes. You keep seeing this "terminal" thing. Don't worry, they'll show you what to do @ <~ http://www.linuxcommand.org/ ~>

MrShameless88 Just Joined! Join Date: May 2006 Location: sumwhere in Asia Posts: 12	Hi. Im having exactly the same problem as rax. After umcompressing the .tar.gz file, i dont know what to do next. I've followed muha's instruction but after i clicked "accept", Yast ask me to insert CD2. I did try changing the path after ticking "view details" but no help. Also, i've downloaded the Thunderbird 1.5 file and uncompressed it but didnt know what to do next. Could you check this out to help me? Thank you a lot

I have tried to update FF by following muha's method but it will not work since the version of FF I'm currently using is v1.0.8 and the 1 offered to be installed by YaST is v1.0.6-16 so that will a downgrade rather than an upgrade.

I tried to update (just to test) using the file "updater" u mentioned and u R right. It's useless @ least apparently. I doesnt do something.

This is the list of the files I'm currently having in my uncompressed directory of FF v1.5.0.4: list.txt

So what should I do in order to update to the latest version of FF ??????

MrShameless88 Just Joined! Join Date: May 2006 Location: sumwhere in Asia Posts: 12	Well, we just need to run the script firefox in the folder. Actually i've done this before but it reacted so slow in KDE, and i thought if i did something like "installing" it, it would be faster :drown: . I tried running it in Window Maker and it was much faster. Same thing to Thunderbird. Maybe this is the way they work huh?

Which one of all the files, that file you named as "script" ???

Just wondering.... It's not possible to update FF by just copy all the contest of this folder over the old one, so that you will be overwriting the old files ????

muha Linux User Join Date: Jan 2006 Posts: 290	drop what you are doing and read this to update firefox: Either go here and surf to your type of suse (10.0-i386 or 10.0-x86_64 or etc..) ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/pro...refox/1.5.0.4/ Probably you are using 386 (so not the 64bit) and need to go here to get the firefox-rpm: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/pro...0.4/10.0-i386/ Download it. Right-click on it in konqueror to: actions -> install with YasT. You don't need the .src .rpm's so don't get this one: MozillaFirefox-1.5.0.4-0.1.src.rpm Note: this is a better way of updating your system: Go: 'start' -> system -> control center -> online update Should also get the latest versions for all software. But that might fail because of the installation sources you are using. /edit: the one this is offered to me in this way is 1.0.8-0.2 So the above option with .rpm is a better/later version. I'm not sure which 'installation sources' you need to add to get 'software management' to get your latest firefox .. You could look for one. __________________ Now what? For example, if you're already in the folder, type ./firefox, and press enter. (In this case you must include the "./") I guess my words are no more neccesary but as u asked, i tell.
