Strange behavior when changing windows in gnome

Hi

I use openSUSE 9.3 with GNOME 2.20 on a HP pavilion laptop. When I want to change from one program to another I click in the panel and then move my cursor up to operate in the newly opened window. Sometimes, however, when I'm about to move up (still in the panel) multiple OTHER windows open while their icons in the panel start to flash.
On the laptop mouse is a mouse wheel on the right side but I'm somewhat confident that I don't touch it. Maybe I have missed a feature but I don't really know what could cause this....

thx
