No, I can get the xserver to load on boot but that means I can't have the driver installed.

Did you have the driver package from kubuntu and the manual install in at the same time? That really messes things up.

No, I used the driver package to uninstall the driver I had installed manually and rebooted. That's when the desktop booted up without any problems.

I went back into the driver package and installed the Kubuntu drivers and it stopped booting properly again

I personally don't see what the big deal with compiling the module again after installing or updating your kernel, particularly since I'm always updating my kernel, I haven't had any problems using the installer from the nvidia site, run the

nvidia-installer --uninstall

make sure it removes everything

Definitely try using the nvidia-installer to remove it, as that should get everything. Even if you need to reinstall it fully to uninstall it

The driver is currently uninstalled. Using the installer with the --uninstall flag says that the driver isn't installed. The driver isn't installed via the restricted drivers either.

When I boot the desktop starts up no problems. When I install the driver, either way, then that's when the error occurs

when you install the nvidia driver from nvidia website does it give you any errors or any warnings?

No, it installs fine and then I can start kdm with the driver installed as normal.

When I reboot the GUI doesn't load until I reinstall the driver again.

is the module being loaded on boot? I know earlier in the thread someone mentioned adding nvidia to /etc/modules

after a reboot does

lsmod | grep nvidia

produce anything?
