Problem Loading X Window

I used startx to start X Window. It gave a message that I was running the session as a previeged user and all the stuff about security risks. Anyways I was logged in as su.........I selected continue............and then it all froze..........I waited for a along time but nothing worked......I had to force switch off my laptop. I don't think I have a memory problem as I have 2 GB of RAM. Please help me out.
P.S.: I am a Mint user.

It's a very bad idea to run startx as root. Do you get the same problem when you run it as an ordinary user?

Welcome to the forums!

Some distros disable logging into the GUI as root user, and for good reason. You should only log into the GUI as a regular user and then you can use su or sudo to run any needed administrative tasks.
