command line skills!
i just installed ubuntu studio 8.04 but am still learning command line navigation and am not sure how to load the gnome at login??i've looked at the terminal guides but it seems they all assume you are already in the desktop... anyway ,just wanting to know what command to use to get going.thanks!

Do you mean that on boot you start at a console login?
If so you can edit you /etc/inittab file.

As root, type, in a terminal:
Code:
vim /etc/inittab
Near the bottom, you see a line like this:

id:3:initdefault:
Change the 3 to a 5, save and you're in business.

If I read your post right, it sounds like you're booting up into a command line environment. If you just want a graphical environment, type startx and hit the return button. If it's something else, post back to clarify. Welcome to Linuxforums.

startx was the command i was looking for but as it turns out i had just installed the base system and not the desktop...oops!thanks for your reply's.peace.
