Can you tell us more about your system? What distribution are you running? Are you trying to use GDM with GNOME or a different window manager/desktop environment?

I have installed gdm & xserver on top of the root file system that I have built using kernel source. Now the root file system has gdm & xserver also in it. I am booting this root file system from USB stick. The GDM is executed at kernel boot by calling /usr/sbin/gdm from etc/inittab. I am facing problem while running this gdm.
