I did some switching between XFree86 and Xorg, and now when I boot up Linux there are two different X processes that get started. I'm running Fedora Core 2, and after the screen asks whether I want to enter interactive startup, X gets loaded, and the screen stays gray all the way until gdm loads about a minute later. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-F8 brings back the gray screen, while Ctrl-Alt-F7 returns to gdm. If I log in then everything works fine for the most part, but my computer gets slowed down a lot and graphical applications don't work well. This is fixed if I Ctrl-Alt-Backspace before gdm loads, or if I killall X from tty1.

Where should I look to stop these from loading at startup? Thanks in advance for any help.

It might be that you have both X servers being started somewhere in your boot scripts, but I don't know about Fedora boot scripts so I can't help much with this.
