xserver failing on start

I am having some problems getting xserver to work on my new box. Below is the relent information from /var/log/syslog

Quote:
Feb 14 23:37:48 spirit kernel: nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
Feb 14 23:37:48 spirit kernel: ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:01:00.0[A] -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 19
Feb 14 23:37:48 spirit kernel: NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-8178 Wed Dec 14 16:22:51 PST 2005
Feb 14 23:37:56 spirit kernel: eth0: no IPv6 routers present
Feb 14 23:37:57 spirit kdm: :0[3260]: IO Error in XOpenDisplay
Feb 14 23:37:57 spirit kdm[3230]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
Feb 14 23:37:57 spirit kdm[3230]: Display :0 cannot be opened
Feb 14 23:37:57 spirit kdm[3230]: Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling.
The machine is a new build, Asus A7V600-X VIA KT600, XFX Geforce Mx4000 64MB DDR AGP8x, AMD SEMPRON 2400+.

I have built a new kernel on the latest version, (2.6.15.4) and downloaded nvidia's latest driver software and that has been compiled also.

After running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and walking through all the settings (resolution set at 1024x768,75mHz, 24bit) and then running nvidia-xconfig, when i start up kdm i get an nvidia splash screen up for about 8 seconds and then i drop back to the prompt.

Its very possible i have missed something out in the kernel however i think this is unlikely because the nvidia compiler didnt complain of any missing options.

Anyone have any ideas? Many Thanks.

The most useful place to look for the problem is /var/log/Xorg.0.log (or /var/log/XFree86.0.log if you don't have Xorg). That will show you everything the X server was trying to do, and where it ran into trouble. Look for lines starting with (WW) or (EE).
