beryl thinks i have 2 monitors

i was able to get my gentoo system to use beryl and aigx, very easy to do with the gentoo wiki. the problem is that in beryl, if i maximize a window, it only goes to half the screen width and full height. i believe this is because beryl for some reason thinks my screen is actualy 2 monitors. i believe this because when i do the cube rotation stuff, i get two cubes. also (in xfce) the virtual desktop switcher looks like 4 tall and skinnny desktops.

i use a widescreen lcd monitor and it is running at 1680x1050

also, when rotating the cubes, they get cut off where they would be crossing over to the other screen if it was 2 monitors.

so how can i tell it it is only one monitor?
