Problem with starting X with RedHat Linux 8.0 (2.4.18-14)

My machine that I've put Linux on at work is an IBM 300XL type 6588-510.
It has onboard video, and has no other video card.

The video is:

Integrated S3 Trio64V2 controller with 2 MB of 50 ns EDO DRAM

according to the technical manual on the IBM support website - ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/comm...p/d4aw1bas.pdf

After it finishes booting, I get a screen of some color ASCII crap which is the graphical logon screen that its trying, and failing to display. If I hit enter a few times, I get to the text logon, which lets me get on that way.

If I run startx, it fails with this info: (from /var/log/XFree86.0.log)

If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/)

************************************************** **********

The first time I installed it, it seemed to have trouble probing my IBM E74 monitor. So I reinstalled it again, this time using a HP Ultra VGA 1280 which it picked up fine. I still have the same problem getting into Gnome thou so I'm guessing its an issue with the vid chipset. It seemed to probe the video correctly as well (as the S3 Trio64V2 of course). Did I test the selected video options during the installation? Yes, and it sortof worked, but with green lines and slight corruption at the top of the screen when the resolutions were tested. It then cleared and I thought it was a quirk or something because simular lines came up on a black screen before the graphical install pages started. The graphical install screens looked fine, as well as Grub on startup.

If I cant use the selected vid chipset, what do I use?? And more importantly, how do I change it once installed!? All the documentation I can find say I should use Xconfigurator to configure the file XF86Config. When I run Xconfigurator thou, nothing happens. (ie command not found). I have tried searching for this Xconfig program, but cant find anywhere in the file system. Then I found some Red Hat install instructions on their official site -

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...ardconfig.html

and it says to run redhat-config-xfree86. When I run that thou, the screen blanks a couple of times, seems to do nothing and dumps me back at the shell prompt.

Hope I provided enough information The machine works fine with NT4 workstation, btw. Help us out if you can, thanks.

you should have posted your /etc/X11/XF86Config as well. edit that file and change the driver from s3 to s3virge or svga and then try startx.
