173.08 is a beta so could still have problems.

How will we know when NVIDIA solves the problem? I don't suppose they'll be shouting about it. Will the pilot number increment?

Yes. I know. It works for me, but it's a beta and might be unstable or problematic for others.

Well, the new beta supports it, so, all the incoming releases will as well. This is something that happens from time to time. Some changes between kernel releases require slight changed on the source of all the external modules. The problem is that, being the nvidia drivers closed source, we have to wait until nvidia releases the update.

Just to update this thread:

Last night I upgraded to kernel 2.6.25.4. Sure enough, NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run wouldn't compile. Easily enough though, I opened Elinks, found the patch, downloaded it and per their instructions did:
Code:
NVIDIA-Linux-86-169.12-pkg1.run \ --apply-patch NVIDIA_kernel-169.12-2286310.diff.txt
Which creates NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1-custom.run. Run installer as usual.

Despite my earlier doubts, I tried the beta and am having no problems with it. I've actually updated the kernel twice and each time the driver was compiled smoothly and works.

Yes, I still haven't had a single problem with this patch. It's easy to install and it seems perfectly safe to do so.

I guess the Arch devs did a good job with nVidia and this kernel because they seem to be working fine together on my box. I'm using the versions that were just released to the Arch repos.

For those of you who haven't spotted it yet - the new Nvidia driver (178.14.05) is out and works nicely with kernel 2.6.25.xx.
