Your channels aren't muted, are they?

You can run alsamixer (command-line), alsamixergui, gnome-mixer, or any variety of mixer you want to check your channels. Your master and PCM should be unmuted and turned up.

Same here.

I have the same problem with 2.6.10-ac1. ESD, aumix, mpg123 etc use the card happily but no sound is heard. Same set of modules from 2.6.9 work perfectly.

The "card" is integrated on a cheap ASRock K7S41GX motherboard.

Code:
0000:00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Sound Controller (rev a0)
        Subsystem: Unknown device 1849:7012

Run the program 'alsamixer'.
Make sure each channel has 100 volume, do this by moving with the left/right arrows to each channel and using up arrow until it says 100.
Also, make sure each channel is not muted by using the 'm' key on each channel, if it's muted it will have an 'MM' at the top of it.

If it's all unmuted with volume all the way up, then check the docs at http://alsa-project.org. Check the supported cards listing, find your card, and read the docs for your specific card to ensure it's all set up correctly.

my channels aren't muted and i went to the site and i will try to follow the instructions there...despite the fact that my kernel recognised and installed the module...

valan, sarumont: thank you for your input - however this really seems to be a driver issue.

I too checked the mixer settings (alsamixer and aumix (OSS)). Both ALSA- and OSS-based applications (alsaplayer-alsa, mpg123-oss) have the same behaviour -- under 2.6.9 they output sound, under 2.6.10 they don't. On both kernels the hardware is recognized, and apps can talk to the drivers, but on 2.6.10 the card remains silent.

stathisx and I seem to have the same hardware. A post to the kernel list might be a good idea - stathisx, is your kernel patched or vanilla?
