On my Eee PC, I had to change the recording type to .wav . I also had to set the recording input to front mic, instead of just mic. I did this using the alsa mixer. To open it, enter thid command.
Code:
alsamixer
The Tab key will cycle through [Playback] [Capture] [All] screens. Left/Right keys to change to a different slider control, and Up/Down to change the control's source. Esc will exit.

And one more thing. In the regular mixer GUI, I selected Device: HDA Intel (Alsa mixer)
