Hello guys,
I have been trying to isntall RHEL 5 in my laptop( aspire 573. But the problem is that its not detecting the hdd.

So, I intalled CentOS 5.1. everything seems to be fine except for sound and the network driver.....anybody know..wherer to find the network driver?????/
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

Red Hat and other Enterprise distros can be challenging to get working right on laptops. Unless you have a compelling reason to use them, I would recommend going with something like Linux Mint or other more desktop oriented distro. If you do want to use a Red Hat clone, I would recommend Scientific Linux over CentOS.

For the network, are you talking wired or wireless?

well, as part of my course, we have to learn server administration in RedHat. Since I couldnt install redhat i opted for centOS in my laptop. And centOS didnt really get working with the wired network driver. I downloaded a linux network driver from Broadcom, my laptop's network card manufacturer, and tried installing it. But that didnt work too.

I think I gotta start using Scientific linux. But does it have all the features of RHEL??

Yes, like CentOS, it's basically a clone of Red Hat. I recommend it because CentOS has historically been a little slow to release some security updates and because Scientific Linux is backed by Fermilab and CERN, meaning they have more resources and a higher propability of longevity. But in your case, learning server admin for a course, it doesn't matter too much which you use. CentOS is perfectly good, it's just if I were running a business (and decided against paying for Red Hat support), I would choose Scientific Linux over CentOS.

Hardware recognition should be the same in all of them, so switching won't fix the problem.

Read the sticky on Wireless Setup and post the requested info here. That info will help with the wired card as well.

well...i am need of a RHEL clone with a working network driver.....configuring ftp, samba share,,,,and I might have to show it by accessing the ftp or samba share from another computer in the network.....man..I am in a fix.......any more suggestion reed???? And thanx for the reply..........great article .....u linked there.....

This will tell us which network chip you are using, and we may find out if you need firmware to get the driver working.
